“The basic data for this book was originally compiled by James M. Flammang for the Standard Catalog of Imported Cars. It was later updated by Mike Covello in the Standard Catalog of Imported Cars 1946-2002. We have greatly enhanced the database for this book, added color images and updated the collector price estimates to current market conditions.” (p. 10)
(1971) “BEETLE/SUPER BEETLE — FOUR A Super Beetle debuted for 1971 with a coil-spring front suspension and a bigger trunk. Volkswagen promoted the fact that the car had 89 improvements, including a boost to 60 hp. New flow-through vent ports went behind the side windows. The Super Beetle had chrome trim around its side windows and a modified front-lid shape. The front tread dimension grew wider and the turning radius was smaller. These cars also got computer-analysis plugs.” (p. 96)
(1998) “NEW BEETLE — FOUR The retro-styled New Beetle was a modern rendition of the classic ‘People’s Car’ and it really turned people on. With zooming sales, the cute little ‘Bug’ was a major hit. Released in the spring of 1998, this car surpassed success in the automobile arena to become a major new pop culture phenomenon. There was so much interest generated by the clever ad campaign that cars were soon selling for a premium far over their sticker price.” (p. 185)
