The following letter is in response to our story, “2018 Honda Odyssey: Somebody’s going to hell.”
It appears that the Japanese manufacturers have decided to produce the “expressive” models of minivans. Honda to greater degree than Nissan. The Dodge Grand Caravan is nice and inoffensive. The Pacifica is a bit more artsy but still quite acceptable. Ford tried with the Flex, a minivan/retro wagon that looked like a factory built custom vehicle, much like a ’66 Buick Riviera.
Ford succeeded with me, I’ve got a’17 Flex and I love it! Ford also went a bit over with the Lincoln MK T, and low sales were the result. Minivans have some real advantages over mid sized SUVs and CUVs. I’ve had two of my own over fifteen years, I don’t consider my Flex a minivan. They just aren’t considered that cool, but that didn’t bother me at the time. I don’t know if excessive styling is the right approach to gain more customers.
