Bill Porter: Why as a Pontiac designer he competed most against Chevy

1967 Ford Mustang and 1969 AMC Javelin

“(The AMC Javelin and AMX) were very handsome cars.  They look great on the road. They were fine, and they still look today. They’ve held up very well.  But I was in Pontiac at that time, and I was worried about what was going on in Chevrolet down the hall.  I wanted my Firebirds to beat their Camaros that I didn’t really look at AMX or anybody else that much. I didn’t even take a look at Ford, because, you know, Chevy was right in my face. . . . (M)y problem was the Camaros were out selling Firebirds two-to-one and the Pontiac dealers were screaming and hollering.”
