To this day, I do not understand why the vertical Edsel grill is so reviled ! There were many Packard enthusiasts who wanted the Packard available with a 1930s-like grill in the 1950s. Then there were Alfa Romeos…desirable cars with vertical grills. I have never heard a negative word about the Alfa grill. (The ugliest grill on a car since 1956 Hudson has to be the current crop of BMWs with their ridiculous interpretation of the twin kidney’s…”Car & Driver” was right ! WOOF !!!!!)
Indie Auto has given the Alfa grille its due. In a story about a Halloween-themed 2019 auto show, we noted that the “Alfa Romeo Stelvio does a better job of being scary. The headlights have a ‘don’t mess with me’ frown and the lower-level gills appear to be quite efficient at capping ankles. The main problem is that the traditional Alfa radiator grille looks more like a urinal than the jaws of death (press logo to flush).”
