LS stopped by to respond to our article, “1970 Pontiac Firebird: Time to go on a diet.”
I don’t know what the author is talking about. The 1970 Firebirds were lauded as a groundbreaking design. They represented a beautiful design change from the first generation. My father gave me a choice of getting me a 1969 Firebird base model or for a few hundred more the outstanding new styling of the 1970 Firebird Formula 400! No brainer, 1970 F400 in Coronado Gold!

As I’ve always said; Everyone is entitled to voice their opinions, no matter how wrong they may be!
The other great statement (Frank Lorenzo) was “One in the right constitutes a majority”.
The 1970 Camaro and Firebirds are absolutely wonderful aesthetic designs. Wonderful surface development. They show some of the best work of GM Design/Styling of the period.
I will concede that in retrospect the cars were a bit fat in cross section but there is nothing wrong in the side view or with the platform. For their time, they were great.
Again, in keeping with their time, there was no way that they would not be designed to accommodate the large block motors of both Chevrolet and Pontiac.
Sure wish that the current generation of Camaro was based upon this seminal design instead of the 1st generation. Apparently that was an internal argument of GM Design on which to recreate and sincw Ed Welburn had a 1st gen his vote counted most.
