A few years ago residents of a Lake Quinault neighborhood posted a number of do-it-yourself, speed-limit signs. However, when I drove through this neighborhood last summer I didn’t notice any of the signs.
If they were indeed taken down, I hope that wasn’t because the law told them to do so. I thought that the DIY signs sent a more compelling message than the “real” ones typically did. One reason why is that they were visually different, and so more easily caught my eye.
In addition, the symbols included on the signs were a useful reminder of the range of people and animals who could be endangered when motorists sped down this country road.
“Random Shots” is a regular feature that captures sublime and ridiculous moments in American automobile culture.
